Fragmented forests Navigating a human landscape

In the BudongoBugoma corridor, deforestation and land-use change has meant the chimpanzees traverse busy roads and use village paths to navigate their home ranges. Our forest conservation and replanting programmes aim to restore their natural habitat and maintain habitat connectivity in this mosaic and fragmented landscape.

Perilous crossings The highway hazard

Traffic poses a lethal threat to chimpanzees forced to cross busy roads. Our reforestation project is helping maintain vital green corridors, which promote safer movement of chimpanzees in the landscape, reducing their need to risk road crossings with speeding vehicles.

Foraging struggles Seeking sustenance on farms

When wild forests shrink, chimpanzees turn to agricultural crops like jackfruit for survival. We are planting indigenous food trees to help replenish their natural food sources and reduce pressure on local farms.

Adapting to change A sweet but risky snack

Sugarcane offers a quick energy boost for nursing mothers like Georgia. While chimpanzees readily incorporate nutritious crops like sugarcane into their diets, crop feeding causes conflicts with local farmers. Our goal is help restore the chimpanzees’ natural forest diet and foster more peaceful coexistence.
