Orangutans and chimpanzees are consistently ranked among the most intelligent non-human animals studied, but their intelligence isn't identical — it's shaped by very different social lives and environments, and researchers have found real differences in how each species' cognition shows up in practice.

A shared foundation

Both species show the hallmarks of advanced primate cognition: sophisticated tool use, the ability to plan for future needs, self-recognition in mirror tests, and the capacity to learn symbol systems or basic sign language in controlled studies. On most standard cognitive tests, the two species perform comparably well, and there's no strong scientific consensus that one is simply "smarter" than the other overall.

Where chimpanzees tend to excel
